Brazil Day 0a: Half past three in the morning at João Pessoa beach

To kill time at the gate (2 hours) we wanted to give our robots the opportunity to stretch their legs. As an error occured in the demo script, we placed Wheatley in an airport buggy to show him the terminal. In the meantime Nils fixed the bug.
The departure was on time and was followed by a short flight to Paris. We just had a short stay at the Charles de Gaulle airport, but we managed to pass most of the checkings quickly (more than two boarder supervisors wouldn’t be a bad idea for the amount of travellers…) and so there was time left for a short shopping. We bought chocolate and a french riddle magazine for amusement during the transatlantic flight.

For the long stay on board the riddle magazine alone was not a satisfying amusement. For this reason we were coding or we used the in flight entertainment system and the handed blankets and pillows for sleeping. The quality of the meals was very delicious, but the particular amount of food left some team mebers hungry. In particular in the vegetarian meal there were some kalories missing, but in return for this it was served clearly ahead of the others. We were especially glad for Dennis that everything worked well with the gluten free meal despite of some trouble we had during registering for it. At approximatly 4 pm brasilian time the first extensions of the south american continent appeared under our plane.

After the arrival in Rio de Janeiro the happenings of the last days were brought back to our memories: already at the passport cotrol the supervisors congratulated us to the win of the FIFA world championship. Behind the passport control we found Fuelco, the mascot of the FIFA world championship. Of course we took advantage of the situation and had a souvenir picture taken.

It seems to be unusual in Brazil that luggage is checked through to the final airport and so we had the chance to convince ourselves that also our luggage made it to the right country. Our plan was to directly check in our luggage again, pass the security check and spend the last five hours waiting time till the next flight at the gate. Unfortunatly the baggage check in opened just 2 hours in advance of the flight. For this reason we had the chance to send an expedition team to get in touch with the local food sources. A rich variation of food was located in the third floor of the aiport building, but the explorers were not able to get closer than 5 meter to each sale booth. Employees seemed to appear from nowhere to indefatigable promote the advantages of their english menu. After all team members were provided with food there was time to look and listen around. The latter appeared to be complicated as most of the announcements were made in Portugese. In general the knowledge of English was spread in different variety throughout the employees. Fortunately the see(curity)-check could be passed quickly. Last insight before the flight: Water from the water fountain could be probably used without any further treatment for a German swimming pool.
The flight to João Pessoa was a night flight and thats why not just our team but also most of the other passengers tried to sleep.
We left the aircraft at 1:20 a.m. on time, fetched our complete and intact luggage and met our contact person from the local transfer agency (who appeared to speak English very well). Surprisingly we already made it to the hotel at 3 a.m. We expected a lot more delay and a longer check out and for this reason we thought a room for another night is not necessary. We tried to make the best of the situation, left the luggage in the hotel and spend the time till sunrise at approximatley 5:30 a.m at the beach next to the hotel. During this time we took time by the forelock and made a first short meeting about the tasks for the next days.

As two of us dropped in at the hotel to ask for a toilet, the concierge surprised us with the offer to take two of the four rooms in advance and a breakfast for all of us for just a little extra charge. An offer we could not refuse.

Half past three in the morning at Hamburg Airport

And once again: GlaDOS, Wheatley, Atlas, Tamara, Wilma and Fiona at Hamburg Airport. This time the trip goes to a land, that was in the headlines the last weeks: Brazil. Shortly after the end of the FIFA World Cup, the RoboCup World Championship takes place in the northeast of Brazil – and of course, the Hamburg Bit-Bots are present!
Because of the air connection we will travel nearly 24 hours until we arrive and that’s why we are sitting in the midnight at the airport. First realization: Until half four am. you are not allowed to go into the departure lounge, but you can wait in the arrival area and there is even power and wifi. Most passengers – that arrive that early – use their time to take a nap, instead of working.
Shortly after the check-in and the security check, which was pretty uncomplicated, we are now at the gate and waiting for the plane. Let’s see, what’s coming up next.

Coding Weekend

Our journey to Brazil is getting closer. There are just two weeks left, so we are going to make a coding weekend at the upcoming weekend (4/7 – 6/7). The main focus will be on testing the software, do some necessary hardware modifications and organize the last things for the trip to Brazil.

We are very excited and look forward to our second big journey.

The referee’s whistle

In the past we often had to experience that the wireless network did not work as reliable as we would have liked it to be. So we eagerly searched for possibilities of recognizing the referee even without a working Gamecontroller.

Usually the referee uses a whistle to start the play after the game state SET, so we developed an approach based on Fast-Fourier-Transformation and analysis of the extracted spectrum which looks promising.

In the picture, it can easily be seen that a specific frequency is dominant throughout a given time. If our robots are manually set to the game state SET and the game is ready to start, this can be used as a help for the decision when the game state should change to PLAY.

sound

Maybe this might even give us a small advantage in a match with a working GameController, as it usually has a delayed reaction.

We will see…

IranOpen – Day 3

Yesterday evening we got the command that we have to leave the competition hall at 6 pm. Everything will be searched and nothing that we would need tomorrow was allowed to be taken to the hotel this day. The rease was a so called “highly important person”. That was a major problem for every team. Especially the laptops were needed to keep working at the hotels. We decided to leave the robots and three laptops there and take the rest of the laptops with us.

To be safe, we asked Neda, one of the translators, who we met at the beginning if it was adequate to buy other cloth for our female team members. This question got positive response. Our cloth was ok she said but for such a VIP it would be better to wear traditional iran clothing. As soon as the hall closed at 7:30 pm we drove to the center of the city (we live at the suburbs) and bought new headscarfs as well as a Manteau each. This is a form of coat but looks rather like a blouse going down to the knees. Neda, our female translator is very helpfull. She is fast end effective in helping us to organize vegetarian food or cloth. From our point of view the women here are much more pragmatic and can enforce themselves better than the men. About Teheran we will talk another time when we visit it. The evening was quiet despite the try of Timon to fix the broken shower, which was a metalic hose without the rubber. Duck tape didn’t do the trick so we need to find a better solution. It is kind of a tradition to fix at least one broken thing at the hotel where the Hamburg Bit-Bots are staying.

This morning we arrived at the hall in time and were allowed to take our laptops back in after they passed a control at the metal detector! The VIP was Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, former president and still the third person in the country next to the fact that he is the richest.

After he circled with his cortege through the hall the IranOpen where started with big green-white-red smoke and firework. All with the lovley sound of the fire alarm.
It seems that there is a big fan base for robots here, the hall is full and the mood reminds us of carneval. We were already filmed and iterviewed several times.

Our first game was today against the Bassets. Until last year they played at the teen-size-league but due to rule changing they are now allowed to participate in both leagues. Even with our robots facing the enemy fearlessly we lost the game with 0:2. But we are plesant with this result. Our robots were fully functional and didn’t made any mistakes.

The one hard action was when Tamara tried to hold a ball that was kicked by one of the enemy players which were three times higher than the darwins resulting in a falling robot by the impact of the ball.

In comparision with the other teams we need definitly not to hide and our next game will be tomorrow at 9 am against the Bolt Hearts.

IranOpen – Day 2

This morning we were the first team in the competion hall. We are still struggeling with the fact that schedules are rather soft than deterministic. The mesurement of the robots were set to 9 am and with only three hours delay it actually happened.

Before that we tried raisin and carrot jam for breakfast. We could not really taste a lot of difference. At breakfast here in iran it is primary very sweet-tasting.

We by the way are living in a hotel at the Olympic Academy of Iran. The national boxing team we could already see at training and Tamara as well as the other robots could already pull some olympic air through their fans, awaiting the day robotic soccer becomes a olympic discipline. We still don’t know when the games will be, but we keep you informed as soon as we know something.

While the organizers still working on the setup, we are continiously working on our robots. The vision works now even with the bad light conditions. How our robots will handle the uneven field we will see. The floor is made out of wood panels which bend when a person walks on them. With the referee walking all over the field during a game, that could be a real problem.

Additionally we had the chance to see all the other robots at the tournament and in the evening we will get the chance to visit Teheran, because the competition hall is closing at 6 pm.

We are still curious.

Arrival at IranOpen

After we already had a delay of 1 1/2 hours at depature in hamburg, we finally managed to arrive in Teheran. We had a stop in Istanbul to refuel the plane which took another whole hour. At least we didn’t had to leave the airplane. All in all the flight was pleasent and the food was enough,

In the evening after arrival we also had to get our visa, which costs exactly as much as a german passport. During the one hour car ride to the competion place, we could take a look at the traffic system of Teheran. There is actually a relativly modern traffic guidance system with a lot of small LED signs. How exactly those things work, we don’t know yet but our guess right now is that they need to be some kind of traffic light.

The architecture is very interessting and absolutely less boring than the german one. Furthermore there are a lot of art and light installations next to the streets. Soon after arrival at the hotel we managed to get into bed very quickly and the wonderfull mountain panarama scene, we only saw at the next morning.

We are currently in the competition hall and have, even if slow, at least a stable internet connection. Due to this we think that we need to post a lot of images and videos after we
got back to germany. The organizers of the event are still working on the setup within the competition hall and sometimes the power supply turns off.

We just got something to eat and for all who are wondering, the time shift to germany is about +2.5 hours. So it is always a little bit later than in hamburg. When exactly our games will take place is not sure by now. Here it is all a little bit slower than in germany.

Travel to Iran Open

Still very tired from participating at  the GermanOpen last week, a part of our team is already on their way to Teheran where the IranOpen will take place. Next to some teams from the iran, the Fumanoids and Bold Hearts will also be there and give us the possibility for an exciting rematch. How well we can report about the tournament is not entirely clear by now, but we hope we can at least give you some small updates from time to time.

Fiona has arrived!

The long awaited new member has arrived just in time for the crucial phase of the season. From now on Fiona will be joining the Hamburg Bit-Bots. Now she has to show her power in the final training camp if she wants to score a place in the starting formation at the GermanOpen. This could be bad news for the lastly disease-ridden Atlas. However there are also unconfirmed rumors, that Atlas is working hard on a comeback as a goalkeeper.

But even if Fiona should not join the starting formation, the management will keep an eye on her and her play after half-time break at the latest.
Regardless of the potential tension, we are very happy about her arrival and keep our fingers crossed for a quick success.
